By no means are these links comprehensive. Most of them are homepages I have found useful or interesting. In each section I have attempted to provide a link to a site whose goal is to provide a comprehensive list of information on the subject.
Feral Monk Parakeets (Quaker Parakeets) in North America
- This nice site is maintained by a woman in Florida writing a book on feral monk parakeets. She is actively seeking information on the birds and includes listings and pictures from several states. Highly recommended.
QUAKERVILLE Davey Gallery, Feral Quaker (Monk) Parakeets
- Includes three pages of nice pictures, and now an audio page. The audio files are large but worth it.
Beth's Back Yard
- Really a subsite of Quakerville, but the pictures of monk parakeets at a backyard feeder are worthy of individual mention.
Erik's Monk Parakeet Page
- General info. and specific mention of monks in Texas.
The Wild Parrots of San Francisco's Telegraph Hill
- Technically not a page on monk parakeets, but worth seeing. The info. is from Mark Bittner, a man who has been taking care of and recording the details in the life of a flock of primarily Cherry-Headed Conures in San Franciso. Some really wonderful photos here. Mark was also on CNN speaking on these psittacids. You can read the report here. A professor in San Fran. also has a page on San Fran's other flock of feral parrots.
The Monk Parakeet
- A biology professor at the U. of Bridgeport created this page on the birds there.
The Wild Bird Cam
This Internet feeder camera occasionally has monk parakeets. See pictures of them in the archives section.
Quack and Remo's Quaker Page
- Comprehensive listing of quaker sites.
Subscribe Quaker List
- Quaker Mailing List. Site also includes pet bird FAQ.
The Online Book of Parrots
- All info. for the psittaciphile.
Jim and Kathleen Carr: Our Quaker (Monk) Parakeets
- Nice pictures and songs from their four pet parakeets.
The Aviary-State Restrictions on Ownership of Quakers
- In addition to the listing of state restrictions, this large site includes the Quaker Parakeet Mailing List homepage and a FAQ.
Planned Parrothood
- A nice resource for information on breeding psittacids.
The Rare Quaker Parrots Home Page
- Some strange pictures of blue, cinnamon and yellow quakers. A little info. on selective breeding technique also.
Chicago Area Birding Guide
Illinois and Chicago Birding
Illinois Natural History Survey
- Read about all of their interesting work and publications. Also links to IL Dep't. of Natural Resources.
The Birds of Fermilab
- A very long list of bird species at the National Accelerator Laboratory. I believe they have recreated a prairie around its premises.
Chicago Audubon Society
The Field Museum of Natural History
- The best museum in Chicago, in my opinion. Their homepage is pretty good as well.
Chicago Academy of Sciences
- Information on the Chicago Nature museum and many other projects in the area, such as the Peregrine Falcon release project.
U. of Chicago Dep't. of Ecology and Evolution
- My employers for the summer. I felt like I had to include them.
Birding at the Mining Co.
- Great site! Go see it!
www.birder.com
- Includes "virtual birding" and many links, including many pages dealing exclusively with one species of bird.
BIOSIS-Biosystematics and Life Sciences Resources
- Hundreds of links for biologists, especially taxonomists.
Birdlinks
- More links than you will ever live to look at.
National Audubon Society
The Virtual Birder
- A great site that features games to test your bird identification skills.
U.S. and Canadian Birds
- A huge list of almost a 1000 species in North America.
The Electronic Zoo
- For the animal lover.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology
- The pinnacle of ornithological research in the United States and maybe the world. One of the highlights is the library of natural sounds.
Peterson Online Birds
- Somewhat of an homage to Roger Tory Peterson. One can download demos of their multimedia CD-ROM bird guide.
www.birding.com
- The homepage of Thayer's Birding Software.
The WBU FeederCam
- Wild Birds Unlimited's Feedercam.
Hummingbirds!
- The best homepage I have seen on a single family of birds. I have recently become interested in hummingbirds and was extremely impressed by this site. Everything you would want to know about hummers, and dozens of great pictures.
