Photographs of the Hyde Park Parakeets

For those of you not familiar with the parakeets, here are some pictures I recently took. Most of these photos were taken on March 11, 1998, two days after a nasty snowstorm that was followed by several days of freezing temperatures. A 400mm lens was used in most cases. Directly below you can see the nests in Washington Park frosted with snow, as well as one of the large nests that fell to the ground after the branch it was on gave way. Below are three pictures of the parakeets that use the nests at the bottom, roosting in a tree on an extremely cold afternoon (17 degrees F!!) 3-9-98.

The pictures below show a group of monk parakeets and a starling in a snowy tree, and a group of parakeets at a nest during summer. The middle photo is of a monk eating at a feeding station in early winter.

Even when the parakeets' nests are covered with snow, they will keep the birds warm when they roost in them at night. However, if they are loaded down with too much frozen precipitation, they can snap the branch they are built on.
